Memrise Application As the Idea to Upgrade Vocabulary in Learning English

Abstract

The power of vocabulary is the key to reach English language competence. This research aims to upgrade students’ vocabulary by using Memrise application as digital based learning.The researchers apply  digital media-based approach which offers interactive and engaging language learning features .Classroom Action Research design is used to collect the data  through tests, observations, documentation, field notes, and interviews. The results of  pre-test  indicate that only 47% of students gain the minimum passing grade. After utilizing Memrise application, the post-test result in Cycle I increase to 76%, and 85%  in Cycle II, overcoming the success criteria set by the school. Moreover, students' activeness and engagement also increase to 76% and  90% . In summary, Memrise application is  proved to be an effective tool to upgrade students' vocabulary and  digital literacy.
